Artist’s Statement

Eva Coleman

I was on a ski trip in the Austrian Alps in the late January of 1986….. It was 4:00am, and it was freezing cold…..
It was agonizing…..

On that terrifying morning, I decided to leave my skis, my boots and my old life behind forever, and ask for political asylum….

I was to leave my family and friends, thinking I would never see them again, in order to get away from the grayness of the terrorizing
communist regime of Czechoslovakia….

My paintings reflect my journey…..

Sometimes painting returns me to the past, I try to symbolize the moods and experiences that I had growing up in Prague.

Sometimes my paintings reflect my new life here in the United States and sometimes, my painting reflect the constant battle between
the past and the present within me.
